Traveling and standing gravitational waves are analyzed and classified using Petrov's (1966) classification techniques. Metrics are obtained for both types of waves, and the wave fields are classified according to their lambda matrices. It is shown that most traveling-wave fields belong to type N except in the case of certain hypersurfaces. In this case, they belong to type 0. The fields of standing waves are shown to belong to type I unless they are characterized by certain lines. In this case, they will belong to type 0.
