Lofoten-Vesteralen comprises an amphibolite to granulite facies terrain, metamorphosed in the granulite facies at 1.8 Ga. Amphibolite facies marbles retain close to premetamorphic carbon and oxygen isotopic signatures (δ13C ~ +10‰ (PDB), δ18O ~ +26‰ (SMOW)). The margins of marbles near the amphibolite-granulite transition and granulite facies marbles show large shifts to much lighter carbon and oxygen (to δ13C ~ -7‰ (PDB) and δ18O ~ +10‰ (SMOW)). These shifts imply exchange with a CO2-bearing fluid. Large CO2/rock weight ratios were achieved in granulite facies marbles and this could reflect large-scale infiltration of CO2 into the granulite facies crust. The occurrence of carbonic metamorphism in at least some granulite terrains could be a reflection of high mantle CO2 degassing rates in the Precambrian or the recycling of carbon in a subduction related environment.
