The pulsar PSR 0809 + 74 has been observed simultaneously at frequencies 102, 406 and 1412 MHz, recording individual pulses with a time resolution of about 1 millisec. Additional observations were made at 102, 92, 62 and 39 MHz to obtain the alignment of the integrated pulse profiles. In the generally accepted polar cap model, pulsar emission occurs in a region defined by open dipolar magnetic-field lines, lower radio frequencies being emitted at larger distances from the neutron star surface. Although the observations generally support this model, the more detailed characteristics of pulse arrival times, pulse drifting and the cross-correlation of intensity fluctuations at different frequencies require a more complex model of the magnetic field at the polar cap. It seems that the magnetic field is not purely dipolar but includes a multipole component and contra-rotation twisting at large radii.
