The regularity of the planetary orbits, the similarities between satellite and planetary systems, and the chemical composition of the planets are data which must be taken into account by all cosmogonic theories in order to explain the origin of the solar system. A scenario for the formation of the solar system is described which consists of the following four stages: (1) the formation of a protoplanetary disk from the condensation of a nebula; (2) the chemical condensation of grains whose composition depends on the distance to the sun when the nebula cools off; (3) the formation of planetoids by gravitational instabilities in the grain disk; and (4) the formation of planets and satellites by collisions and agglomerations. The exploration of the solar system using interplanetary probes such as the Voyager 2, the laboratory analysis of meteorites and lunar rocks, the observation of planets, and the development of theoretical studies facilitated by the use of computers, have provided information for a better understanding of the formation of the solar system.
