Interstellar formaldehyde absorption lines have been detected in the direction of 100 Orion-population stars. The low angular resolution of this survey prevents discerning any direct connection between these young stars and the gas surrounding them, but does allow establishing that the dust clouds in which they have formed are different from quiescent clouds. In these regions of recent star formation, there is a higher percentage of relatively strong H2CO lines, which can be explained by a difference in their density and/or temperature gradients. A further indication of the effect on the dust clouds of the formation of stars lies in the velocity dispersion of the formaldehyde lines. Dust clouds containing very young clusters (with no visible early-type stars) have velocity dispersion similar to those in quiescent clouds, but those with more advanced clusters show distinctly broader lines. The Orion Nebula region shows a significant difference in the dispersions measured near the center and at the periphery.
