In an experiment modeling the motion of a hypersonic vehicle in a planetary atmosphere, a filter radiometer was used to measure the brightness distribution along the axis of symmetry at a wavelength of 0.63 micron near models moving with velocities of 2-4 km/s in pure air and in an air-xenon mixture at a freestream pressure of 39-65 mm Hg. An empirical dependence of the brightness maximum on mixture composition, pressure, and Mach number is obtained. At a freestream Mach number of about 10, the brightness in xenon in the shock layer is an order of magnitude greater than the brightness in pure air.
