Recent studies of the dynamics of the mesopause region using ground based radars are reviewed. While results from a range of techniques are discussed, particular emphasis is given to measurements made using radars operating in the 2-6 MHz frequency range and which make use of signals partially reflected from ionized irregularities in the 60-100 km height range. Most MF/HF partial reflection (PR) radars use the spaced antenna method and a brief discussion of recent advances in this technique is given. The review concentrates on observations of: (1) prevailing winds; (2) planetary scale oscillations with periods greater than 1 day; and (3) gravity wave and small scale motions. Where possible, hemispheric differences are stressed. The review concludes with some suggestions for future lines of research.
