The interim results of the middle atmospheric research program of the IUGG are reported. Some of the topics discussed are: the dynamics of the mesopause region; the applications of incoherent radar scatter measurements to the study of physical processes in the middle atmosphere; and lidar measurements of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Consideration is also given to: infrared radiative cooling in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere; transient disturbances in the stratosphere; middle atmosphere tides; and gravity wave saturation and eddy diffusion in the middle atmosphere. The status of current understanding of the electrodynamic processes in the middle atmosphere is also discussed.
