Ten LMC areas, each 50 arc min in diameter, were surveyed photographically with the CTIO 4 m telescope. The exposures assured a high degree of completeness in the identification of all possible LMC clusters. Previously catalogued cluster candidates were examined and 36% of them turned out to be either non-clusters or presumably accidental field star groups. This result and newly discovered likely clusters can be used to estimate that the LMC cluster system numbers about 2300 or less. A comparison of diameters of LMC and solar neighborhood open clusters suggests similar distributions.
