Running penumbral waves are modeled as magnetoacoustic-gravity modes propagating along the lower boundary of the penumbral magnetic field. The theoretical properties of surface modes on the boundary show that it is not necessary to invoke trapping of magnetoacoustic-gravity modes (by increasing sound and Alfven speeds away from the boundary) to produce the confinement of the modes to the photospheric/chromospheric region. Running penumbral waves are interpreted as fast magnetoacoustic surface modes.
