Observations of the umbra/photosphere intensity ratio for large sunspots are discussed. Data for 1968 to 1983 are presented, covering most of the solar cycles 20 and 21. The observed solar cycle variation is reflected in a correlation between umbra/photosphere intensity ratio and the sunspot latitude. The umbral and penumbral intensities of the same sunspot are well correlated. This suggests that the responsible mechanism acts on the whole sunspot. No correlation between intensity and other parameters such as magnetic field and size is detected for sunspots with umbral radii 5 sec of arc.
