The complementarity of solar and stellar observations to increase understanding of the basic phenomena and mechanisms of activity is discussed. Analysis of the characteristics of stellar cycles and their dependence on stellar parameters such as mass, convection zone depth, rotation rate, and age should highlight dynamo operation modes and, in particular, the large and small time scale dependence of the solar cycle, in the framework of the mutual interaction between the linear and nonlinear approaches.
