The luminosity distribution of pulsars is investigated. A gap in the middle of the observed distribution at log Lgap = 27.5 (cgs units) is found to be statistically significant. The implications are discussed in terms of the possible existence of two distinct pulsar luminosity classes, considering in particular the standard magnetic dipole model, the disk model and a recently proposed model in which superfluid neutron vortexes provide the dominant torque. An alternative explanation for the gap is that pulsars either evolve very rapidly or temporarily cease to radiate as they reach the critical luminosity Lgap.
