A series of nonionic aliphatic compounds was adsorbed from aqueous solutions on Ca-mont-morillonite and the adsorption isotherms were determined. The differences in molar adsorption are attributed to the influence of the chain length and the CH-activity. These effects are shown to operate independently. The (001) spacings of the clay-organic complexes were measured and one-, two- and three-layer complexes were recorded. The orientation of the molecules in the one-layer complexes is discussed. It is considered that aliphatic molecules orient with the plane of their chain both parallel and perpendicular to the clay surface.
