The selection and optimization of a dispersion element for a balloon-based high resolution infrared spectroscopy project are described. The signal to noise ratio for observations of interstellar sources, dust, and other sources is given. It is demonstrated that a lamella grid is superior to the Michelson interferometer. An analysis of the entire optical system is carried out. Expressions are derived for normalized noise power of the detector and perturbation radiation, and for the optimum modulation frequency. A rocking mirror configuration is adapted for the instrument.
