It is pointed out that approximately 40% of the 161 X-ray sources listed in the Third Uhuru Catalogue are considered to be extragalactic. They include at least one quasar, several clusters of galaxies, radio galaxies, a normal spiral galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds, and a large number of still unidentified sources. Various extragalactic X-ray sources are discussed and attention is given to the design of a sophisticated observatory for X-ray astronomy scheduled for launching as a satellite in 1978.
