It is demonstrated that a three-color system can remove some of the ambiguities inherent in inferring redshifts from measured colors. Observations of galactic magnitudes obtained by CCD camera and filters approximating the photographic J, F, and I are transformed to the standard color indices (g-r) and (R-I), predicted location of galaxies of different Hubble type in (g-r)(R-I) diagrams as a function of redshift is demonstrated, and agreement is found with measured colors for galaxies in the cluster 1455 + 2232. Magnitudes and colors of galaxies associated with high-redshift radio galaxies are presented, and the existence of foreground clusters is discussed on the basis of the color-color diagram. The observed colors suggest that recent star formation represented by an exponential model gives the best fit. The luminosity evolution implied by the observed amount of color evolution is determined, and the relative importance of luminosity evolution due to evolution of stellar populations as compared with galaxy mergers is discussed.
