An investigation is conducted of the effects of the presence of a medium on nuclear reaction rates, giving attention to the modified Coulomb interaction in the case of the head-on collision of two charged particles in an electron-ion plasma with a certain dielectric constant. It is shown that under certain conditions enhanced fusion rates can be obtained. The results are applicable both to controlled thermonuclear reactions and to astrophysical conditions.
