The spherically symmetric accretion of matter onto a neutron star with a
weak magnetic field is shown to be accompanied by the generation of
gamma rays due to the Comptonization of X-rays from the neutron star on
the flow of incident plasma. This process may be a source of cosmic
gamma-ray bursts.
