Self-irradiated accretion disks around neutron stars with the appropriate surface temperatures perform long scale cyclic variations of their disk structure. For a constant mass overflow rate from the secondary, this implies that disk thickness and mass accretion rate onto the central object vary periodically. When the observer is sufficiently close to the equatorial plane, this leads to periodic obscurations of the central X-ray source and thereby provides an alternative model for the 35-day cycle of the HZ Her/Her X-1 light curve. The model may thereby explain a series of apparently contradictory, but crucial, observations. It is emphasized that although the model's essential mechanism operates in an azimuthally symmetric disk, the outer rim structure of the accretion disk cannot be azimuthally symmetric, due to the appearance of tidal mountains.
