The authors decompose the observed radio-to-infrared spectrum of 3C 273 into a self-absorbed synchrotron spectrum S of a partially opaque shell source and radio emission from 5 moving knots C1-C5, the first 4 being already detected by VLBI observations. The VLBI core-component D is just a superposition of S and the undetected knot C5. The observed UV-, X-ray and γ-ray luminosities are used to constrain the physical parameters of the shocked region which is proposed to be the source of all nonthermal radiation in 3C 273.
