The OAO-2 observations by Code and Welch of 40 spiral and irregular galaxies in UV light are used to obtain the intrinsic 1910 Å flux and (1910-B) color of the stellar population of these galaxies. According to evolutionary models, the intrinsic UV fluxes are expressed in terms of recent star formation rates. These rates correlate with the total gas content but no significant dependence on the average gas surface density is found. The relatively small dispersion of the star formation rate from average trends is interpreted as a lack of significant variation in the initial mass function. The two-color (1910-B, B-V) diagram is presented and discussed in order to set limits on the importance of bursts in the star formation process.
