Observations of 6-cm H2CO toward M17 show evidence for a wide, weak line near a radial velocity of 19 km/sec, and a narrow, intense feature at about 24 km/sec. The former, conspicuously associated with a lane of obscuring dust west of the H II region, exhibits a systematic line-width gradient that indicates a collapse of part of the H2CO cloud near a region of high density and intense molecular emission. Dynamical arguments suggest a mass greater than about 40,000 solar masses for the collapsing region, while considerations of optical extinction and H2CO density imply about 8700 solar masses for the remaining part of the extended dust lane. The 24 km/sec cloud, of relatively low density and mass, is apparently a foreground object.
