The technique of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) occupies a special place among the tools of observing astronomy due to its unrivaled angular resolution. VLBI routinely allows for milliarcsecond-scale imaging at centimeter wavelengths with global arrays of radio telescopes. The ultimate development of the VLBI technique is Space VLBI, whereby one or more orbiting radio telescopes enable the baseline length limit imposed by the Earth diameter to be exceeded, and even higher angular resolution to be attained. The first dedicated Space VLBI mission, VSOP (VLBI Space Observatory Programme) began its scientific operation in 1997. We present VSOP results of the study of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with milli- and sub-milliarcsecond angular resolution at observational wavelengths of 18 and 6 cm. These results, combined with the vast observational data base from various spectral domains, provide important clues about the nature of the most central regions of galaxies. We emphasize the early results of VSOP surveys which allow us to address the problem of the radio morphology and evolution of compact radio sources in AGN in the range of redshift from 4.5 to 0. We briefly discuss the prospect of space VLBI for the next century and its role in addressing the nature of the Early Universe.
