A formula for the effective van der Waals broadening of iron spectral lines by neutral hydrogen is deduced from previous calculations of line broadening and is justified by empirical analysis of solar iron lines. The enhancement factor of the line broadening over the classical van der Waals value is shown to be an increasing function of the excitation potentials of the line. It is noted that this formula may be used to predict the pressure broadening of neutral iron lines for stellar spectral abundance analysis.
