Variations in emission-line structure with evolution of the spectrum of the nova HR Del in 1968 and 1978 are discussed, and it is found that all the emission lines have four components, with the outer ones arising in the equatorial belt and the inner ones arising in the polar caps. The intensities of the inner and outer components in the profiles of the hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon lines are compared, and evidence is obtained for variable physical conditions in the HR Del envelope. The emission-absorption lines of hydrogen, iron, titanium, vanadium and chromium dominate the spectrum of novas prior to maximum light, and after maximum, hydrogen, iron, calcium, sodium and titanium dominate.
