The paper examines recent improvements on measurements of proper motions of stars, and the resulting refinement of the current knowledge of star cluster members. Comparing clusters in color-magnitude diagrams for evolutionary studies and the problem of defining cluster members are discussed. Astrometry is evaluated as a solution, where photographs taken at different times are compared for varying motions, with true members shifting in unison. Using high-speed computers high-quality proper motions can be derived from large-scale plates. Proper motion criteria found by using automated devices measuring positions of stars on plates are also used to recognize white dwarfs in open clusters, and may help astrometry become a more active field in astronomy.
