This paper will consider the source of continuing gender inequities in science and other professional careers. Despite generally good will in most universities and other professional organizations, women continue to fall behind their male colleagues. Their proportionate representation falls off at every point of the pipeline: from undergraduate to graduate to post-doc to rising levels of professorships or research scientists. At each step, also, there is evidence of inequities in pay and other resources. The mechanisms that produce these results are subtle and difficult to overcome. The discussion will use the MIT Study on the Status of Women Faculty in Science as an example of the issues involved.
