Qualitative consistency with the properties of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter has been established for the solutions of hydrodynamic equations describing an ideal incompressible fluid. The equations yield a simply-connected Rossby vortex, or solitary wave, that would develop in zonal plane flow with velocity shear. The treatment of the Red Spot presented fundamentally differs from that of Maxworthy and Redekopp (1976, 1980).
