Masses and bolometric luminosities are determined for the nuclei of 42 type 1 Seyferts, 17 type 2 Seyferts, and 14 nearby quasars. For Seyferts 1 and quasars the mean ratio of the observed luminosity to the corresponding critical luminosity is 0.46 + or - 0.17, while Seyferts 2 have a mean ratio of 0.01 + or - 0.003. It is demonstrated that the morphological differences between type 1 and type 2 Seyfert nuclei can be reduced to the dimensionless ratio of the bolometric luminosity of the nucleus to the critical Eddington luminosity for the corresponding mass.
