Several methods for producing representations of the magnetic field above a restricted area of the solar surface from magnetograph data are examined. The problem is outlined of finding a representation for a magnetic-field vector in an appropriate coordinate system, given the value of one component of that vector at a surface corresponding to all or part of the sun's surface. General solutions to this problem are discussed, and particular attention is given to Schmidt's (1964) procedure for potential fields and the method of Nakagawa and Raadu (1972) for force-free fields. It is shown that the drastic differences in the field-line configurations obtained by these two methods are due to different treatments of the boundary conditions. It is suggested that conclusions based on the two schemes are most reliable when they refer to structures that tend to be small or to be near the center of isolated or independent magnetic regions on the solar surface.
