The properties of 5 large scale flare-produced disturbances in the interplanetary medium have been determined by combining scintillation and spacecraft data. The average shape of the disturbances, inferred by model-fitting to a range of disturbance geometries and including the approximate arrival time of the shock at widely separated spacecraft, is consistent with the models of de Young and Hundhausen (1971) in which plasma is initially injected into a cone of half-angle between 30 and 60 deg and subsequently undergoes transverse expansion as it moves away from the sun. Each of the events is related to a specific active region on the sun.
