Winds and temperatures calculated for equinox and solstice conditions by the thermospheric general circulation model (TGCM) are used to investigate their effect on the low-latitude ionospheric F-region. A comparison of calculated values of f0F2 with observed values at two stations having dip latitudes of 1.0 deg N and 11.0 deg S shows agreement during the solar cycle maximum equinoctial period in daytime at both stations. Nighttime agreement at the 11.0 deg S latitude is not as good, however, suggesting that the observed ionospheric behavior may be responding to dynamics associated with the midnight temperature bulge at low latitudes. TGCM wind calculations consider thermospheric forcing only in situ, and the importance of upward-propagating tides from the lower atmosphere for describing both thermospheric and ionospheric dynamics at low latitudes is indicated by the results.
