Results of more than 100 contributions on the subject of electrical discharges in astrophysical phenomena are summarized. It is suggested that the outer layers of the solar and stellar atmospheres are too highly conducting to allow the buildup of electric fields, but that this high conductivity is localized and results from electrical discharges in the atmospheres. While collisions between solid particles are proposed as the probable charging mechanism, it is noted that a generally acceptable theory of charging mechanisms is not a vital precondition for recognizing electrical discharges as observed phenomena. Some properties of electrical discharges are described, including rate of propagation, magnetic fields, the pinch effect, and plasma jets. These phenomena and objects are identified as being due to or characterized by electrical discharges: solar flares, the variation in long-period variables, the filamentary structure of the Crab Nebula, novae, radio galaxies, barred spirals, quasars, and the jet of M 87.
