The paper compiles the evidence necessary for the interpretation of an observed solar oblateness. Emphasis is on time-varying excess brightness, intrinsic visual oblateness, and normal oscillation modes of the sun. Solar edge definition is discussed, with particular attention paid to the finite Fourier transform definition. The possible role of solar oblateness in gravitation theory is considered.
