Review of forms of violent nonstellar activity associated with galactic nuclei, particularly strong extragalactic radio-frequency emission sources, and of models advanced to account for them and evidence testing the models. The extended radio source Cyg A (3C 405) is cited as illustrative example, being the strongest extragalactic source of radio emission. The beam model (two beams emanating from the nucleus in antiparallel directions and energizing the source) and the slingshot model (massive self-gravitating bodies flung out of galactic nucleus) are considered at length. Evidence needed to test the models (data on extragalactic gas, data on thermal gas within radio components, nonthermal IR and optical emission, orientation of source axes relative to optical galaxies associated with radio sources) is listed. Classes of objects of interest inhabiting the centers of galaxies include: clusters of objects of stellar mass, supermassive objects, massive black holes, and gas accumulations.
