A review of the observational data on gamma-ray bursts is presented. Such bursts occur more or less randomly in direction and in time, with durations ranging from 100 msec to over a minute. The strongest events have a -2/3 power law distribution of number versus intensity; for weaker events threshold effects in the detector are significant. The comparatively hard spectrum of the bursts is best fitted by two power law curves, with an exponent of about 1.4 below 200 keV and about 2.6 above this value. There are no obvious spectral lines. The fine structure remains detectable upon initiation of the main burst of radiation, which typically follows several brief precursor spikes by about 10 sec. There is an apparent tendency for the radiation to be modulated into several sub-bursts lasting about 1 sec. It is unclear whether spikes are overlapping or distinct. The observation of sharp drops in the flux during radiation peaks indicates that the main bursts consist solely of brief bursts resembling the precursors rather than of spikes superimposed on more continuous radiation.
