New calculations of neutrino emissivities and opacities under conditions of stellar collapse are made which take into account the presence of neutral currents and electron degeneracy effects. Estimates are made of the energy of a neutrino leaving the core of a collapsing object, and it is seen that the total energy of all neutrinos emitted can be greater than the binding energy of the material outside the core.
