The paper discusses the principal results of a study of spectral energy distributions in supernova ejecta. For type-II supernovae, a consistent model that explains the presence, strengths, and evolution of many spectral features requires about 3 solar masses of hydrogen in the ejecta and solar abundances of Fe, O, Mg, Na, and Ca. For type-I supernovae, no such definite model is suggested, but one possibility is that the ejecta include roughly 1 solar mass of hydrogen and about 0.01 solar mass of once ionized iron.
