Results of a balloon flight with a double Compton telescope are reported which set an upper limit to the soft gamma-ray flux between 1.5 and 10 MeV from the Crab Nebula that is in severe contradiction to previously published flux values. The total counting rate in this energy range is plotted as a function of time after launch, and it is shown that no statistically significant excess was observed in the counting rate over the full observation period. An upper flux limit at the 95% confidence level is determined for the nebula and is found to be at least a factor of 5 below the flux values reported by Baker et al. (1973) and Gruber (1975). This value is also found to be only a factor of 3 above the straight-line interpolation from lower and higher energies. It is concluded that the previously reported excess does not exist.
