The nonlinear interaction of acoustic gravity waves in an isothermal layer of finite thickness is considered. A Lagrange description is used in obtaining averaged equations for three coupled waves. It is shown that as a result of the feedback caused by differences in the directions of the phase and group velocities of the internal gravity mode, a layer of this type excited by an acoustic 'pump' can serve as a parametric generator of those acoustic gravity waves that do not enter it from without. Threshold values are found for the length of the layer, as well as for the amplitude of the generated waves, the possibility of discontinuities arising in the pump wave being taken into account. Qualitative evaluations are given for the solar chromosphere. It is noted that the mechanism analyzed can both facilitate the upward transfer of acoustic energy and serve as a source of internal gravity waves in the chromosphere.
