Exact calculations of the distortion of the microwave background spectrum by dust in the early universe are presented. A range of dust materials and grain-formation epochs are investigated and the dust temperature history calculated subject to the condition that the melting temperature of the grains not be exceeded. It is found that distortions similar to those observed by Woody and Richards (1977) can be produced by several grain materials if the redshift of the grain-formation epoch is greater than approximately 200. The distortions found in the exact treatment are more pronounced than those predicted in an earlier approximate calculation.
