A curve-of-growth analysis of the element abundances in the atmosphere of Kurtz's light-variable, peculiar, metallic-line star, HD 188136, is reported. The low-dispersion appearance of this star, according to Houk and Cowley, is similar to Fm Del stars, except for the outstanding strength of Sr ii lines. The present study reveals that HD 188136 shows a rare earth enhancement intermediate between that of the cool Ap stars and the other light, variable, peculiar star, HD 101065 and, hence, larger than usual in the Am and (5 Del stars. The simultaneous presence of light variability and the strong overabundances of heavy metals in both of these objects suggests that they are related, despite differences in the lengths of their periods and the rapid decline of the heavy rare earths with atomic weight in HD 188136 compared to HD 101065. Possible evolutionary states of HD 188136 and its relation to metal enhancement mechanisms for peculiar stars are discussed, and it is concluded that HD 188136 could be an evolved Ap star.
