Reasons why UV solar physics has always been the centerpiece of solar research from space are given: ultraviolet solar radiation shortward of 300 nm is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and therefore, can only be explored from space; the solar UV is the dominant energy source of the upper Earth atmosphere; the outer solar atmosphere from the transition region into the corona emits most of its radiation in the ultraviolet. For these reasons, ultraviolet solar research can be divided into two categories: the measurement of solar ultraviolet irradiance with no spatial resolution for Earth atmosphere applications; and high spatial and spectral spectroscopy and imaging of the solar atmosphere for diagnostics of the solar plasma.
