The authors have searched for lines of the A - X system of CO at z = 1.93184 toward the QSO PHL 61, based on the suggestion by Levshakov, Khersonskij and Varshalovich (1984) that a possible absorption feature at 39.3 GHz arises from CO. Their detection limit is such that several CO lines should have been detectable in the optical region, and their upper limits suggest that the CO column density is at least a factor of 35 too low to have produced the 39.3 GHz feature. Furthermore, no evidence is found for the existence of an optically thick cloud in Lyman α at z = 1.93184 which could produce CO in observable amounts. In the light of this the authors argue that the 39.3 GHz feature is not from CO, and suggest that a CO search should be conducted toward QSOs for clouds whose neutral hydrogen column density exceeds 1020cm-2.
