It is possible that the low-elevation, smooth northern hemisphere of Mars was created by impact. The planet would then have been in a state of non-minimum potential energy. One possible way in which a minimum energy state could be restored is for the core of the planet to move towards the new centre of mass. Mechanisms for such movement through the planet are suggested and the release of energy on core movement is calculated. If the energy is released asymmetrically then a convective system in the Martian mantle could initiate the growth of the Tharsis region on Mars.
