The calculation of proper elements of asteroids is presented, and three different theories developed by Yuasa, Knezevic, and Milani (YKM); Williams; and Lemaitre and Morbidelli based on Henrard's seminumerical method are compared. Proper elements are calculated for regions with small eccentricities and inclinations, outside of resonances and not too close to the main planets. The principles of these three theories are developed and the results are found to be in complete agreement. It is concluded that the YKM theory is the most precise, fastest, and easiest to use for small eccentricities and inclinations. For higher values of eccentricities and inclinations the HLM method based on Williams' ideas seems to be the most adequate.
