We report on Chandra GTO observations of SN1987A made in September 1999 using the HETG grating and the ACIS-S readout array. Total observing time was 117 ks. The 0th order image, which contains 700 photons, shows a clearly resolved and extended remnant from this 12.5-year-old object. We present spatial and spectral analyses of the 0th order image, corrected for CTI effects and for the grating efficiency, and compare the current flux to previous observations. In addition to the 0th order image, we report on preliminary results from the dispersed spectrum. Because of the faintness of this object, the dispersed spectrum requires careful extraction from the background. The spectrum is compared with theoretical models for the X-ray spectrum of this young remnant to obtain constraints on the state of the emitting gas and to further constain models for the X-ray emission. This work is funded by NASA grant NAS8-38252.
