Observations relating to the abundances of the light nuclides in various astrophysical sites are reviewed. A section describes the synthesis of the light nuclides by spallation reactions resulting from the bombardment of the ISM by GCRs. Thermonuclear production and destruction of the light nuclides in nonexploding stars or in explosive stellar events are dealt with. The authors consider briefly the evolution of the light nuclide abundances during the galactic lifetime, from which pregalactic abundances can be derived. The latter composition has to be confronted with big bang nucleosynthesis predictions. This question is addressed shortly.
