The COBE satellite has detected faint ripples in the cosmological
microwave background which were the seeds in the Big Bang that
eventually became the large-scale structures of the universe. The
observational and theoretical developments leading up to this finding
are briefly reviewed, and the consequences of the finding are discussed.
